I know, I know. Last month I said I wasn’t sure about Birchbox.
I think really I’m just against making decisions.
Anyway, I’m still getting it, and that’s going to continue for the foreseeable future, so let’s just agree to no more “she loves me, she loves me not” Birchbox discussions. Good with you? Good.
So in July, subscribers were able to pick one of their samples. I missed the email (which I’m still grumpy about), but it was such a huge hit that they decided to do it again in August. THIS TIME I WAS NOT MISSING THE EMAIL.
Sure enough, I got the email, but I didn’t get it until about 8 hours after they sent it. Which meant that when I logged in to choose my sample, two of the choices were sold out already. There were four to choose from: Noir Eyeliner, ModelCo Bronzer, Laura Gellar Cream Eyeshadow, and theBalm Stainiac. You could also opt to get the “Everygirl” box instead, with products that were all under $35 retail.
I debated about the Everygirl box, because it had the Benefit Push-Up Liner in it, and I’ve really been interested in trying it. However, two of the other items in the box were things I’ve gotten before (Harvey Prince Hello and Number 4 Comb & Protect). While I’ve loved both of those, getting new samples is way more fun. Plus, call me crazy, but I enjoy surprises. So the Everygirl box wasn’t for me.
That left me with the option to pick from one of the not-sold-out samples, or pick nothing and see what happened. I’d gotten the Stainiac balm in a box last year, so I knew I wasn’t picking that, and I also knew I wouldn’t end up with it in my box if I didn’t pick. I really wanted the eyeliner, but it was sold out, as was the eyeshadow. That left me with the choice of the bronzer or pressing my luck and not picking. I had zero interest in the bronzer, so I decided not to pick anything.
I’m so glad I risked it.
But before I move on….this month Birchbox added fun little adjectives to subscribers’ addresses. I saw several pictures – some were “The Fabulous so-and-so,” others were “The Lovely,” or even “The Magnificent.” I am a complete and utter failure, because I didn’t look at my box. Then, after seeing everyone’s photos, I still didn’t look at my box. I thought about it 4 times before I recycled the box, and never looked at it. So I have no idea what I was. Sad. You can bet I’ll be checking next month’s box religiously.
The theme for August was “Lighten Up.” It was supposed to be products to help me kick back, relax, and take a load off. Honestly, I could care less about the theme, but I do think this month’s card was super ugly (like that matters…).
Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo: I’ve been curious about Amika ever since a friend got the blow-out spray in a box last year. Dry shampoo and I have kind of a love-hate relationship…I love the idea, but hate the way it feels on my hair. It’s generally too thick, and ends up making my hair stiff and gross. I’ve only used this once, and it was on 3-day old hair, but so far, I like! Smells great – not too strong, which is a huge problem with most dry shampoos I’ve tried. It also doesn’t leave a white residue. For that reason alone it’s a winner. It’s talc-free, so I suppose that’s why. Definitely happy about this sample!
Dr. Jart+ Dis-A-Pore Beauty Balm: Last year I tried their BB Cream, and had so-so feelings about it. I know a lot of people love this brand, but I just don’t think it’s for me. This balm felt fine going on, but made my face look super chalky. It also did nothing for my pores, and I actually think it made my skin oilier instead of controlling it. I ended up putting regular foundation on over it because it looked so bad. And it smells kinda funky. I’ll hang on to it – it may be better in winter.
Naobay Body Radiance Lotion: Ok….I’m not going to lie or beat around the bush. This stuff smells like lemon pledge. As a lotion, it’s so-so…doesn’t wow me, but I don’t hate it either. It’s got olive oil and avocado in it, but the lotion is surprisingly runny. I’ll say though, I enjoy getting organic items in my boxes. They’re a little hit or miss, but I get to try a lot of things I wouldn’t normally.
Noir Cosmetics Long-Wear Eyeliner: I GOT THE EYELINER!!!!!! I never used to wear eyeliner, but I’m starting to thanks to all the ones I’ve been getting in my boxes. I’ve learned that “soft” liners make all the difference. This one is awesome, and it’s a full-size, so I’m set on black eyeliner for a while. Now I just need to learn how to sharpen them. (I think I need to invest in a nice sharpener…)
Benefit Cosmetics It’s Potent! Eye Cream: I’ve recently rededicated myself to eye cream. I looked in the mirror on my way to work and was kind of terrified by what looked back! That said, I feel like eye cream is one of those things that’s really hard to review, because you have to use it consistently for a while. And most any eye cream is going to be an improvement (for me, anyway). I liked that I got two samples, even if it was an accident. So I won’t bash this one, but I won’t sing praises for it either….Benefit is another brand that I’m just not sold on yet.
I love knowing what everyone else gets, so if you have Birchbox, did you get anything good this month? Don’t have it, but want it? Grab a box here!
