February Beauty Blitz

Anyone else ready for summer?

Truthfully I was never ready for summer to LEAVE, but I don’t always get my way. Sigh.

By the way, how was your Valentine’s Day? I hope it was full of kisses, whether those were the sexy kind, the furry kind, or the chocolate kind. I got a romantic bone the day of and decided to make chocolate-covered strawberries as a surprise for Jimmie… not hard, though I did figure out why you always see them with the tops on. I made a bit of a mess.

IMG_4098And they looked really stupid. Or at least I think they looked really stupid. Jimmie kept saying they looked fine, but I think he was just trying to be nice.

IMG_4100I really got into the whole V-day thing this year. I think it was partly because I was snowed in and had time to think about it, but maybe I’m just getting less bitter and cynical.

Whatever, I decorated, and I got the girls ready for the guys to come home.

I hand painted the wood blocks from scrap wood, and the heart was a goodwill find – painted pink! The bird was another goodwill find.

It took way longer than it should have to get this picture, and by that time I was so ready to be done that I just ignored the smushed up dog bed in the background.

And I even made doggie treat bags and got Luka a bandanna ready.

So you know, he picked steak. And we skipped the salad.

A friend had given me a bottle of Champagne (sorry, sparkling wine) so we popped that open. I admit I drank most of the bottle. I mean….what were they thinking when they made those bottles? There’s no way to get a cork back in. Guess you just have to drink it all.

Anywhooo…that was Valentine’s Day. IMG_4156About that summer…..

I’m not sure if it’s the cold weather or the fact that I’ve been reading a lot of beauty blogs, but lately all I can think about is buying new beauty products. Do I need new beauty products? Uh, no. Not even. Do I want them? Of course. I blame you, Birchbox.

So typically I’ll buy beauty products like…four times a year. Or when I run out of foundation, or my mascara is so old it’s crusty coming out of the tube. I used to buy them a lot, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that A) I spent way too much money on makeup in my youth, and B) I only use about 10 items anyway.

Speaking of, I really should go through my makeup and toss stuff.

It’s soooo hard though! Seriously, am I the only irrational person who thinks “I’ll definitely wear that peacock blue eyeshadow one day”??? Will I? Probably not, but it’s M.A.C. and at one point I loved it. Ok, I’ll be honest. I still love it. But it requires some precision to look decent, and most mornings I don’t have the energy for that.

Now I’m going to have to post a picture of the eyeshadow, aren’t I?

How about all my M.A.C. shadows? I haven’t bought one in years, but for a while there I was kind of obsessed. And I didn’t think a thing of dropping $14 on one shadow. And yes, I will agree that they’re some of the best shadows I’ve ever owned. Anyway.

It started with the mascara. I’m always on the hunt for THE mascara. You know, the one that feels great, doesn’t smudge or flake, and gives you awesome volume and length and separation in one? THAT ONE.

Obviously, I haven’t found it.

I’ve tried so many I’ve lost count. I’ve only ever bought the same mascara once – and that was this time. Which reminds me where I was going in the first place with all this.

Ok, so I actually needed mascara. My Maybelline Mega Plush was broken, and about 15 months past the throwaway mark. My Revlon Lash Potion was pretty much empty. Pause here….

I really really like both of these mascaras. The Maybelline feels awesome…it’s super lightweight. It takes several coats to really do the trick, but it feels so good I don’t care. It’s my go-to when I’m tired or don’t want to look like I’m wearing makeup.

The Revlon is also pretty good, but it’s heavier, and towards the end of the day I can feel it on my lashes. It’s definitely in my top 5 mascaras.

Ulta was having a sale, and I figured, why not try something new? I grabbed a Mega Plush to replace my broken one, and ended up settling on Loreal Voluminous Original as my newbie. That one gets rave reviews all over blog-world. I’ve tried the Million Lashes and the Extra Collagen, and liked both of them a lot. Plus, in general I really like Loreal (I use their BB cream, blush, and highlighter). Unfortunately, I grabbed waterproof. I hate to say it, but that totally skews how I feel about this mascara….because it’s so damn hard to get off.

Then came Be a Bombshell. I got a couple products from Ipsy, and then I read a blogger’s review of several products. She called one lip gloss “unicorn pink” and I knew I had to try it. Like, immediately.

Or not immediately, because when I realized it was $14, I choked a little.

But then B.a.B. sent me an email for 50% off. Oh dear. And THEN I came across an Ipsy code to get 40% off and a free blush. Decisions, decisions.

I ended up with the lip gloss, an eyeshadow, and the free blush for $19. Score.

I love them all.

The Unicorn Pink lipgloss (it’s actually called Kiss Off) is pretty subtle, and it’s actually fairly close to the Sephora lip gloss I used for years. It’s a little sticky, but nothing troublesome. The eyeshadow is Money Money, and it’s gorgeous. It’s also SUPER pigmented. When I first tried it Jimmie told me I looked like a raccoon. I’ve since learned to have a lighter touch. As for the free blush, it was Raspberry Tart. Also super pigmented, also gorgeous. I’m definitely a fan of the Be a Bombshell products. Can’t wait to get more….on sale.

And then came Birchbox. FINALLY!!! It took way longer than usual to get here. I was starting to get a little antsy. I was also getting annoyed, because Birchbox kept sending me emails about the stuff in my box….so I accidently found out two of the products. And then I got worried, because all over Facebook and blog-land all anyone could talk about was how horrible their February box was.

Let me just say….I freakin’ loved my February box.

IMG_4150Harvey Prince Hello: One of the items Birchbox told me about. I really really love this perfume. I may actually end up using my points on it, I like it that much. I can’t describe it…just go smell it.

Juara Candlenut Body Creme: Um, this smells DIVINE. No really. I can’t stop smelling my hand. As a lotion, it’s basic. But the smell…..wow. I have no words. Sweet and nutty and ….that’s all I’ve got. Yum.

100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara: The second item BB spoiled. But oh what a good spoiler. I loved the 100% Pure products I got in January . I’d been hoping for the mascara then, so was really stoked to get it this month. The first thing I noticed is the smell….OMG. It smells like berries and grapes. To die for. It’s lightweight, and it actually is a pretty good mascara. Would I buy it? No, but that’s mostly because I have a really hard time spending $9 on mascara, much less $18. Would I ask for it for my birthday? Yup. (HINT)

Bain de Terre Passion Flower Color Preserving Shampoo and Conditioner: I really enjoy getting shampoo in my box. Maybe some people don’t, but I’ve always used the cheap stuff…so it’s a real treat. This stuff smells good, and it’s all-that-crap free. I’ve used it twice, and while it makes my hair really shiny, it also kinda weighs it down. This isn’t my fave shampoo/conditioner duo I’ve gotten, but it’s also not the worst.

But that’s not all. Oh no.

Because I had a coupon for Burt’s Bees. And I was almost out of my Cocoa and Cupuaca Butters lotion. Remember how I said I’ve only ever bought the same mascara once? Well, I’ve only bought the same lotion three times. The Bath and Body Works Cherry Blossom (original, not that yucky Japanese one, ick), Gud Vanilla Flame, and this one. What can I say, Burt’s Bees makes awesome lotion.

I love this stuff….got it for Christmas last year, and have been rationing it ever since. It’s creamy without being greasy, and it makes my skin feel so soft. And like all Burt’s products, smells delicious. Give it a try -I actually saw a coupon in Walmart today for $1.50 off. It was one of those little pads on the shelf, so I bet they all have it.

And why was I in Walmart, the store I hate? Because I wanted nail polish, that’s why.

Don’t judge me.

Yet another blogger posted about Butter London’s “Black Knight” polish, and I fell hard in love. I own one Butter polish, and it was a reward I bought myself for losing 10 pounds once. I just can’t bring myself to spend $15 on nail polish on a regular basis. So I got on Pinterest, and found out that Hard Candy makes a polish that’s a pretty good dupe for the Black Knight.

Since I don’t have the Butter, I can’t compare. But I love the Hard Candy. And it was $4. And it’s awesome. And really difficult to take a picture of, so you’re just going to have to take my word that it looks almost identical to the Butter. As for the formula…well, it was gunky, and it chipped off almost completely after 2 days, but that’s nothing new for me. Which reminds me – anyone have a clue why my polish peels off in sheets? Julep is the only brand that doesn’t, but I can’t believe every other nail polish brand sucks. I don’t have anything on my nails before hand, my coats are thin, and I use a top coat.

Advice is appreciated.

Please ignore how awful my hands look. I'm working on that.

Just kidding. I’m done.

Except….I got a new phone. FINALLY.

So what were YOUR beauty blitzes this month?
