October Birchbox

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am now a member of Birchbox’s Aces Program. Woohoo!!!

AcesActually, it’s not all that exciting. I didn’t do anything to get there…just kept my subscription. Apparently now I get free shipping though, which is the biggest perk that I can tell. Still, though. That’s pretty good. (To get to be a supercool Birchbox Ace all you have to do is rack up 500 points in a calendar year. Not hard.) And since I’m close to 300 points, I feel an order coming on just in time for Christmas. Decisions, decisions.

But more on that later.

For those who don’t know, Birchbox is a monthly subscription box full of all sorts of goodies. Typically, it’s beauty products, but every once in a while you get something lifestyle or home-inspired. For $10 a month you get between 4-6 samples. I’ve had it for over a year now, and I keep it because it’s fun, and because it lets me try a lot of brands I wouldn’t normally try (either because they’re expensive or hard to find). You get points for things like reviewing samples, referring friends, and making purchases, and then you can redeem those points for full-size products in the Birchbox shop. There’s a Birchbox Man option too, but I haven’t been able to convince Jimmie to try it yet.

I’ve decided that from now on, my Birchbox reviews are going to be a little later…like, a month later. So, you know, I can actually TRY the products before I review them. Seems fair.

I was Spectacular Casey last month. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read this post.) October’s theme was Fanfare. Erm?

October Birchbox - Fanfare

October 2014 BirchboxClariSEA Rapid Detox Charcoal Exfoliant: The first thing I want to say about this….it’s HUGE. I mean, looking at it I knew it was a good-sized sample, but then I used it and realized just how far this thing is going to go. I’d be surprised if a year from now I don’t still have some left. So if you buy the full-size, know that you’re getting a ton. I really like this exfoliant. It’s super gentle, but it made my skin feel so clean and soft. Not dried and assaulted, like a lot of exfoliants do. I’d buy it, except the sample is so enormous I think I’m set for a while.

Perlier Intensive Nurturing Body Balm: I actually wasn’t expecting anything special from this. Lotion is kind of one of those things that I’m constantly disappointed by. Not so here. First of all, the scent is so relaxing. Second, it’s thick and creamy and does an excellent job moisturizing. And not just immediately, but all day. The first time I used this was the first day in weeks I hadn’t had to reapply lotion throughout the day. Definitely makes my wish list.

Lord & Berry Paillettes Eye Pencil: I was really skeptical about this. I love the idea of glitter eyeliner, but the reality tends to be pretty…. tweenish. Not this one. The glitter is super subtle, and didn’t make me feel like Miley Cyrus. It’s great for going out, but like most things glitter, it’s a pain to take off.

Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo: I love love love Number 4’s Protectant Spray, so I was stoked to see this. It smells amazing…sort of herbally clean. It’s paraben and sulfate free, so it doesn’t lather like normal. The more of these shampoos I use, the more I adjust to it. This one is a lighter consistency than some of the others I’ve tried…it almost looks like an oil. But my hair felt amazing, both while I was washing it and after I’d dried it. Moisturized without weighed down. It’s $32, so it’s expensive…but I’d probably buy it. Or at least use Birchbox points on it. One thing I’m starting to realize….shampoo is one of those things that you really do get what you pay for. My hair just does not do as well with drugstore shampoo. To compensate, I’m washing it less, so my shampoo is lasting longer…and actually, my hair is doing a whole lot better too.

Number 4 Reconstructing Masque: I have to be honest here. I haven’t tried this. It’s a small packet, and I’m saving it for a special occasion. Sorry folks.

Jouer Matte Moisture Tint: Oil-free tinted moisturizer with SPF? Is it my lucky day? This is my first Jouer product, and I really like it. It feels a little bit thick though, compared to what I was expecting. It doesn’t look thick, but I’m used to pretty runny tinted moisturizers. The color is a little off for me, but that’s not surprising. This covers well and seems to keep the shine at bay a little longer than my normal stuff….but it’s also 3.5 times as expensive. I like it, but I don’t $38 like it.

What did you get in your Birchbox?
