October's Beauty Haul

So…..I’ll get to the October Birchbox in a minute. First I have to share my September Ipsy bag. It came in the mail literally 2 days after I posted the September Beautyfull post, and frankly I didn’t see the point in giving it a separate post.

Anywho, I decided to try Ipsy because I’ve heard such great things about it, and well….I’m kind of hooked on Birchbox. I’m just gonna say…I was sorely disappointed in my first Ipsy bag. Part of it might have been that I got an email telling me my bag had shipped. When I clicked on the link, it took me to a page that showed me what I was getting in my bag. Totally ruined the surprise.

I did love the pink packaging though.

Not really a fan of the bag, but I didn’t really sign up for the service because I wanted the bag. It’s a decent size, though. It’ll probably make an appearance at the next beauty swap.

The one card is just a promotional thing, nothing worth mentioning. The other had this palette inside. I haven’t used the samples, so I can’t comment on them. In general, though, I’m not a fan of card makeup samples…it’s just too hard to get enough to be worthwhile.

Check out my Ruffian nail polish from the September Birchbox!

And finally, the bag goodies (sorry for the horrible pic):

NYX Eyeshadow in Deep Charcoal – This was my first time using an NYX product. I wasn’t excited about the color when I saw it, and I was even less excited when I put it on. My eyes are brown, and my hair is blonde, so I have no idea why someone thought a blue-grey-silver would look good. It makes me look like I’ve been punched in the face. I will say that it lasted a whole lot longer than I expected, so I’d be willing to try the brand again in a better color.

Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil – I was kind of excited to get this, because I’ve been in need of a good black eyeliner. I usually use the self-sharpening ones, though, so was a little concerned about how well this would go on. It was actually quite nice. I’ve read that a couple people had trouble with it smudging, but I’ve worn it several times and had no problems. Unfortunately, it does irritate my eyes after I’ve had it on all day. I’ve only found one or two eyeliner brands that don’t, so I can’t really fault Starlooks for that.

Elizabeth Mott It’s So Big Mascara – Um, yeah. Volumizing? Not even. Lengthening, maybe, but it made my eyelashes look pretty sparse. However, when doubled up with my Revlon volumizing, it’s kind of awesome.

John Frieda Full Repair Shampoo and Conditioner – Ok, ok, ok. I was wrong here. I was not excited in the least about getting shampoo samples. But I ran out of my regular shampoo, so I figured, what the heck. OMG. I love this stuff. It smells amazing, and my hair was so soft and manageable and healthy after I used it. I needed shampoo anyway, so I just bought the full sizes last night. LOVE.

So what started as a disappointment ended up being a decent bag. I’m still not as excited about Ipsy as Birchbox, though…and I don’t want to be spending the money on 2 beauty subscriptions, so I cancelled my Ipsy sub. I didn’t do it early enough, so I still got October’s bag….so wanna see that one too?

IMG_2665Um, ok, so I’m absolutely in LOVE with the October bag. So much so that I put myself back on the Ipsy wait list. Yeah.

First of all, the BAG!!! How perfect is that? I have no clue what to use it for, but I absolutely love it. It’s too pretty to use for a makeup bag. I’ll probably use it for crafty stuff, but nothing that will get it dirty. Now for the goodies.

Coastal Scents Medium Shadow Brush – I absolutely love that I got another eyeshadow brush. I’ve only used this one once, but I needed this size and shape, so it’s perfect.

Zoya Nail Polish in Mason – I was a little skeptical about this color, because I already have a bunch of similar shades. But I’d heard good things about Zoya, and I love nail polish, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I’m so glad I did! Not only is the formula awesome, but I absolutely love the color. It’s nowhere near as pink as it looked in the bottle. And seriously, I’m hard on my nails…and I never use top coat (because I don’t own a decent one…yet…) and after 4 days, it’s only now starting to chip. Think I’ve found a new favorite polish!

Day 1

After 4 days of wear

After 4 days of wear

Bella Terra Mineral Shimmer in Navy – It wasn’t until I wrote this review that I realized this product isn’t eyeshadow. Or isn’t strictly eyeshadow. That’s what I’ve used it as, and it’s highly pigmented. It also lasts hours longer than any mineral I’ve ever used. Apparently, this can be used 8 ways…for creamy shadow, matte shadow, eyeliner, lip color, nail polish, body glitter, mascara, and hair streaks. Not sure I’ll try the lip color thing…actually, no, that’s a lie. I will try it. I’ll try all of these. Anyway, it might have been nice to get the other color (which was considerably more neutral) but this is fun.

La Fresh Eco-Beauty Oil-Free Face Cleanser Wipes – I haven’t tried these yet because I’m trying to use up my crappy dollar store wipes (hey, I was desperate)…but I am always excited to get packages of these. I use them every night, and they’re so convenient when I travel. Plus, there are 10 wipes in the pack, which is freakin’ awesome.

Sexy Hair Texturizing Spray Clay – I was really excited to see a Sexy Hair product, since I’ve never tried one before. I’d also never tried a texturizing spray, so double bonus. This is interesting…it kinda makes my hair feel gritty, but I’m sure that’s my super baby fine hair and not the product. It does add a little volume, and I need to look up the correct way to use it….but yet another good item.

So October’s bag was 10,000 times better than September’s, and now I’m going to try to get back on the list. Sigh. I still haven’t decided if I want to do both Ipsy and Birchbox long term…in general I like Birchbox’s point system a lot better, but this Ipsy bag was awesome. We’ll see. I’ll give it a couple more months at least!

And lastly, October’s Birchbox.

IMG_2649First of all, I was kind of glad I didn’t get the cleanser and cloth combo. I wouldn’t have been able to use it anyway. I knew about the Chapstick and was excited, but I was really hoping to get the Dr. Lipp Nipple Balm. I really want to try it, but I don’t want to spend the money on it yet!

Beauty Protector Protect and Shampoo/Protect and Condition – So Birchbox and Ipsy both consider the shampoo and conditioner as individual samples. I’ve seen several reviews where people are a little bent out of shape, and I guess I can see that…if they’re supposed to go together, it makes sense that they should be counted as 1 sample. Honestly…I could care less. I wouldn’t want to get one without the other, regardless. Anyway, I was intrigued by this stuff a couple months ago when everyone was getting it, so I was glad I finally got to try it out.

Shampoo first. This stuff is THICK! So thick that at first I was afraid they’d mislabeled the bottles. It also didn’t lather well, which is to be expected from a sulfate and paraben free shampoo. I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to that. My hair felt almost dry afterwards. The conditioner was pretty much what I expected…nice and thick without being heavy. Both of them smell amazing. Oddly enough, the smell instantly made me think of my My Little Pony toys I had as a kid. No clue why, but for some reason that was the scent memory I got. Weird.

I was super worried when I combed my hair. It felt brittle and it seemed like I was losing a lot more of it than normal. But then I dried it, and OH MY GOD it looked amazing. The claim on the Birchbox website is that it protects against heat styling, giving you bouncy, shiny hair. They’re not kidding. I didn’t have to use anything else – not a frizz cream, not argan oil, not a flat iron…my hair had zero frizz. And the shine was incredible. It’s pricey, and I just bought the John Frieda stuff, but I am going to seriously consider this stuff next time.

The Balm Stainiac – I got the Beauty Queen, and I was super excited about this. A friend got this in her box as well, and I thought her description was perfect….”It made me look like I was sucking on a cherry popsicle…and not in a good way.” That’s about right. I also didn’t like the fact that it took 5 minutes to dry, and it kinda made my lips burn. BUT – I do like it as a cheek stain. It gives a nice rosy flush that almost looks like I’ve been working out.

Evologie Stay Clear Cream – When I saw this, I was like…wha?? Why did I get an acne cream, and why the hell is it $62? Let me tell you why. It works. I don’t know how or what’s in it, but after one night my acne scars were way less noticeable. Will I pay that much for it? I doubt it. If I had that kind of money to blow, without a doubt.

Chapstick Hydration Lock – I love a good Chapstick, and this is one of those. The vanilla flavor is so mild I don’t even notice it. Does it keep my lips hydrated for the full 8 hours like it claims? No. Does anything? No. Am I happy? Yes. (Lip care is one of those things that really should be on my Up In Smoke list.)

Whew, long post!! Sorry for that, but I don’t see the point in posting a bunch of individual reviews. I’m not a beauty blogger…this is all just part of my trying new things and trying harder to look pretty mission.

I think I might try the underwear subscription box next….
